Electric Car Service Questions

2023 Mercedes EQB

Your life around North Canton will be very different once you own an electric car. You may have questions, like do electric cars use oil? Do electric cars have transmissions? Do electric cars have catalytic converters? This guide from Mercedes-Benz of Canton will help you understand the difference between electric cars and gas-powered vehicles and how a Mercedes-Benz all-electric vehicle can change your life. Contact us if you have any questions.

Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

No, electric cars do not use engine oil. Internal combustion engines need oil to lubricate the moving parts and keep the engine running smoothly. EVs are powered by electric motors that do not use oil, so you won’t ever have to make an appointment for Mercedes-Benz oil replacement around Massillon again.

Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

Yes, electric cars have a transmission but it is very different from the ones in gas or diesel-powered vehicles. Unlike multi-geared manual or automatic transmissions, electric cars only have one gear. Electric motors produce the same amount of torque while running, regardless of RPM, so there’s no need to rev the engine or move up in gears to get the power you need. This makes EVs immediately responsive when you press down on the gas, which is something Columbus drivers have to get used to when they purchase electric vehicles.

Do Electric Cars Have Alternators?

No, electric cars do not have alternators. Instead, EVs and hybrids include a DC-to-DC converter which recharges the battery from the battery pack.

Do Electric Cars Have Catalytic Converters?

The purpose of a catalytic converter is to remove some of the toxins from the exhaust stream of an internal combustion engine. Because they have an electric motor and do not use fuel, EVs do not have catalytic converters.

Do Electric Cars Have Exhaust Systems?

As they do not use fuel, there is no need for exhaust systems on electric vehicles.

Regular EV Service

One of the major advantages of owning an electric vehicle is the savings on regular maintenance. You won’t have to worry about scheduling Mercedes-Benz oil replacements or transmission or exhaust system inspections. There are still a few service items to think about:

  • Battery maintenance – The battery is the most expensive part of an electric vehicle, so be sure to treat it right. Don’t expose the car to extreme temperatures and don’t use lightning chargers too often.
  • Coolant system – Not all EVs have a coolant system, but if yours does, have it checked, flushed, and refilled periodically.
  • Brakes – Brake rotors, drums, and pads will need to be checked regularly.
  • Tires – Rotate your tires and keep an eye on the tread.
  • Wiper fluid – Top off your wiper fluid when it gets low.
