How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Vehicle?

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Charging

We often hear from Canton drivers who are interested in electric cars, but want to know more about electric car charging times before they buy. So, how long it takes to charge an electric car? The short answer, is that it depends on the charging method. You see, electric car charging times vary depending on the charging method you use, and on the make and model of your vehicle. There are three types of EV charging: domestic (Level 1) charging, rapid domestic (Level 2) charging, and public (Level 3) charging. Learn more about electric car charging times here with Mercedes-Benz of Canton, and find out more about EVs as well in our car buying guide.

Electric Car Charging Options

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging): Level 1 chargers use a standard grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet. This method doesn’t provide a fast charging speed, but it’s a useful option for topping off some of the battery charge you used for your North Canton commute. It typically takes around 24 hours or more for a full charge.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 domestic charging stations need to be professionally installed by an electrician, typically use 240V+ chargers, and are specifically made for your vehicle brand. They offer significantly faster charging rates than a Level 1 grounded household outlet, taking 4 to 6 hours to completely charge a fully depleted battery. Massillon drivers also have the option of Level 2 charging while on the go at local parking garages, shopping malls, and more.
  3. Public Charging: You can obtain up to 80% of a full charge in thirty to forty minutes at a Level 3 electric vehicle charging speed, but keep in mind that these chargers are harder to find, cost more, and can’t be installed at home.

Typical Domestic Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Domestic car charging times depend on whether you use Level 1 or Level 2 charging. As a reminder, here are the electric car charging times:

  • Level 1 EV charging takes days to fully charge an EV.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes four to six hours to charge an EV fully. But, you can often get between 60 and 200 miles of all-electric range for your drives to Columbus in only 20 to 30 minutes. This is why most people combine daytime “top-off” charging with overnight charging.

Your charging times could be even faster if you drive a hybrid vehicle, because hybrid vehicles do not rely solely on electricity! They use electric battery power for small amounts of time or when traveling under certain speeds, and can switch over to gasoline power when needed.

Typical Public Charging Electric Car Charging Time

How long does it take to charge an electric car in public? Public stations normally offer 22 kW charging, 43-50 kW rapid charging, and 150 kW rapid charging. As a result, you might achieve a full charge (0-100%) in about an hour, or depending on your vehicle and the specific EV charger, it could take 4 to 11 hours for a full charge.
